Microbiology and Molecular Biology Reviews began as Bacteriological Reviews and was published with this title through 1977 (Volumes 1-41). The title was changed to Microbiological Reviews from 1978 through 1996 (Volumes 42-60).

As of January 2016, MMBR is now available online-only.
MMBR began publishing articles as-ready starting with 2015 issues.
